Based in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath, this course provided teachers with an insight into the science behind the issues of energy and the environment and current scientific approaches to solving these problems. The course was delivered by leading academics researching in these areas and drew on interdisciplinary expertise from the Department’s Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies and the University’s Institute of Sustainable Energy and the Environment.
These themes are directly relevant to the environmental and science and society contexts in the GCSE and A level science syllabi. Teachers gained access to new activities based on cutting edge research which can be used in the classroom and a greater confidence in discussing these issues with their students. The programme included industrial visits and hands-on laboratory work. Most evenings during the residential course there was a ‘Café Scientifique’ event where there was time to quiz leading researchers in the relaxed atmosphere of a Café.
